Raised in the suburbs of Minneapolis/St. Paul and a graduate of NYU film school, Los Angeles based filmmaker Phillip Montgomery has written and directed numerous critically acclaimed short films, commercials and music videos spanning both documentary and narrative genres.
Among his work, an award-winning documentary series for P&G’s RAISING AN OLYMPIAN campaign for the 2012 and 2014 Olympic Games. The films helped earn him a place in SHOOT MAGAZINE’s prestigious New Directors Showcase and the Cannes 2013 New Director Award. Later in 2013, his film titled TODAY, a documentary short about a man who learns to find meaning in his life’s work after a tragic accident, was honored with the Special Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF).
Montgomery has also directed award-winning commercials for major brands including Jack Daniels, GE, Walmart, Guinness, Buick, and SU2C. Phil made his feature film debut with #ReGENERATION, a documentary exploring the state of activism in today’s youth. Narrated by Academy Award-Winner Ryan Gosling, #ReGENERATION was screened in over 20 film festivals, winning Best FutureWave Feature (The Youth Jury Award) at the Seattle International Film Festival and was released theatrically in May of 2012.
Most recently his short film CHILD OF THE SKY continues a busy festival run, and his documentary for the 60th Grammy Awards, featuring groundbreaking AR technology, has earned him a Webby Award nomination for Best Film and was the 2018 winner of the One Show Awards for best interactive/experiential film. He is currently in development on a variety of projects including a new feature length documentary titled GOD’S CHILDREN which explores the homeless epidemic through the eyes of an LAPD officer who has worked Downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row for over 20 years.
